City to monitor flooding with drones

Residents of neighborhoods in Grand Forks at risk of flooding should not be alarmed by a drone flying above them and the Red River, according to a recent announcement from local officials.

Grand Forks will fly unmanned aerial vehicles in and around the Shadyridge and Adams Drive neighborhoods in south Grand Forks for flood monitoring efforts, according to a press release from the city.

Fire Chief Gary Lorenz said during a meeting in March the city was partnering with UND Aerospace and the Northern Plains UAS Test Site to gather aerial images of the neighborhoods via drone to improve understanding of how the area floods …
