CNN received the Federal Aviation Administration’s first waiver allowing drone flights above crowds.
The milestone approval opens the door for other unmanned aerial vehicle pilots to find new uses for their aircraft—from sporting events to news coverage.
The latter doubtlessly CNN’s intention for its Vantage Robotics Snap UAS, a 1.37-pound drone built with the purpose of “safely capturing aerial video over people,” according to CEO Tobin Fisher.
For the first time, CNN can fly in “a diverse range of environments,” including over open-air assemblies, up to 150 feet above ground level.
