As this Northern Hills tourist town considers establishing a “drone no-fly zone” over its historic downtown, some drone proponents contend that Federal Aviation Administration regulations will ground the ordinance before it ever takes flight.
But the city’s police chief, who piloted the effort to draft the ordinance, said he was confident the measure would fly in the face of opposition and potential lawsuits over the proposed ban on unmanned aerial vehicles in the community.
Earlier this month, the Deadwood City Commission passed first-reading of an ordinance that would make it unlawful to operate a drone over the protected airspace located within the area designated by the 1961 National Historic Landmark District, which spans the entire downtown.
