Police to implement new policy on drones

A new federal law requires police departments to implement a policy for unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, which will be voted by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen this month.

The purpose of the policy is to only allow duly trained and authorized officers to deploy and operate the drone for official duties only. These uses will include things like documenting crime scenes, traffic collisions involving fatalities and other incident responses. It will also be used to assist in search and rescue missions, HAZMAT teams and observing general vehicle flow in highly-trafficked areas …
