Driverless delivery: Amazon’s latest patent combines autonomous trucks with drones

Amazon.com Inc. has patented autonomous delivery truck technology that could work with drones to deliver packages more quickly and efficiently.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded the patent — filed in December 2014 — on Tuesday. It describes driverless trucks (they could also be cars, planes or boats) called “mobile bases” that roam around a city with packages for delivery.

Instead of driving to each address to deliver the packages, the driverless vehicles could be equipped with automated storage and retrieval systems to hand off packages to drones, bike messengers, cars, or robotic couriers for the final leg of delivery …
